Ellen Feldmann

Ellen Feldmann began her swimming career at the neighborhood Stoneleigh Pool.  At the “Tuesday night swimming” she was swimming up a storm and won a medal for receiving the most ribbons.   It was there that Reds Hucht spotted Ellen and encouraged her to try year-round swimming with KCO.

One of five children, she and her twin sister, Jane swam with Mr. Hucht through the years.   At the age of 14 she made her first Senior Nationals with the 400 Freestyle Relay.  She then went on to qualify and place in the top ten for the next 10 years at Nationals.

She swam at Notre Dame Prep where she attended school and then went on to make herself known at the University of Virginia where she was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Outstanding College Athletes of America.

Ellen began swimming with Frank Comfort at John Hopkins University during her summer’s home from college.   She went on to set an American Record in the 200 yard Backstroke in 1976 at Towson State University Pool, the only American Record ever set in the state.   In Paris, in February of 1977 she broke two American Records in a short course meters pool in the 200-meter Backstroke and the 400-meter IM.  In doing so Ellen was the oldest American woman to ever break and hold an American Record.

Ellen went on to have a successful career on the Tri-athlete circuit making the all-American Team, winning the World Championship for the 35-39 age group and being awarded the USA Female Amateur Athlete of the Year in 1992.

Ellen has worked for Speedo International and United States Swimming.   Ellen now lives with her husband in Alexandria, Virginia and is the Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager for the United States Olympic Committee in Washington, D.C.
