Julia GormanAt age twelve Julia Gorman had a swimming challenge. Her doctor had diagnosed a shoulder injury that would keep her from swimming Butterfly, her best stroke. Well, judging from the record, Julia overcame that prediction and then some! In a career at the Senior Level that spanned a decade, Julia won four Individual and several Relay NCAA championships, three USS National Championships and swam on three major international teams. After completing her competitive career in l992, Julia dived actively into USS Swimming leadership and currently serves on the USS Swimming Board of Directors. Entering USS Age Group Swimming at age twelve, Julia made up for lost time quickly achieving ranking times and breaking local records. In all Julia gained 34 NAG Rankings with two First places. She still has 16 times in the all time USS Age Group Times and holds eight current Maryland State Records. In National Junior and Senior National Meets from 1982-1992, Julia placed at the top many times. In l986, l987 and l9998 she won Butterfly Titles and scored in finals over a dozen times. As a collegian, Julia won all-American honors at both In international competition Julia earned a place on the l986 Goodwill Games finishing second in the 200 Butterfly. In the l989 Pan Pac Championships Julia again took second in the 200 Fly. In the l991 Word Championships Julia placed fifth in the 100 Fly. In l992 competing in her third Olympic Trials, Julia placed a heartbreaking Third in the 200 Fly only .3 out of a berth on the Olympic Team. No other swimmer in Professionally Julia has taken her experience, knowledge and curiosity of swimmers’ shoulder and expanded it into a career as a Physical Therapist. As a leader in world swimming Julia’s insight into swimmers needs makes a continued impact in policy decisions for USA Swimming. |
