MD Wins 6th Annual National Black Heritage Swimming Championships

The 6th annual Black Heritage Swimming Championships was held at the South Orlando YMCA, Orlando Florida which is the new home for the championships. The meet featured over 500 swimmers of all ages, competing in 100 events. There were many teams from various states and cities such as Maryland, North Carolina, Atlanta, Texas, Detroit, Washington DC, and 20 others that were very well represented. The Maryland Swimming Team consisted of 78 swimmers of all ages represented by 9 different teams. The team was staffed by coaches, Brendan McElroy (BCSC), Julian Wilkins (BCSC), John Mayden (BCSC), Tiffany Ponton (BCSC), Kathleen Barry (Meade), and Manger Karen Coleman (BCSC). The Maryland Swim Team finished 1st with a score of 4,407 points.

Our team rival, the North Carolina Aqua Balzers, finished second with a total of 2,500.5 points. In third were the Flaherty Dolphins with 1,646 points. There were 190 best times, 12 meet records, 22 top 8 finishers, and 5 High Point Age Group winners. High Point winners were Callie Mills (BCSC) 8 and under Gilrs, Tarik Lott (EST) 11-12 Boys, Sjonya Scott (EST) 13-14 Girls, Ryan Barry (Meade) 13-14 Boys, and Joshua Tomlin (BCSC) Open Mens. To end the meet Joshua Tomlin swam in a exhibition heat against Mujahid EL-Amin NAG record holder 50 yard Fly. On February 23, 2008 Mujahid was the first Afro-American swimmer from a Historically Black College (FAMU) to qualify for NCAA's. Going out in style Joshua won the 50 yard challenge.

The Maryland Swim Team would like to give a special thanks to Maryland Swimming for all your support. The meet was a great experience for our kids. The meet saw many personal best times, records, and fast swims. New friendships were born and much excitement is already building up for next year.
