 JCC Boot Camp

We are pleased to announce that 2-time gold medalist Garrett Weber-Gale will be “headlining” our June 2014 Speedo™ BOOT CAMP here at the Owings Mills JCC.

Garrett Weber-Gale (or GWG) was the second swimmer in the famous 4x100 Free Men’s relay at the 2008 Olympics that has been called, “… the best relay in the history of swimming.”  This past summer (2013), he represented the USA at the Maccabiah games in Israel.  He has a regular column on nutrition and fitness in USA Swimming’s Splash magazine.

Garrett Weber Gale runs a popular blog called “Athletic Foodie” and he will be bringing his wildly popular AthleticFoodie clinic to the Speedo™ BOOT CAMP program on Friday, June 20.  In addition to the traditional Olympian-level Swim Clinic, the day will include cooking demonstrations and a presentation by a “Parent of an Olympian” on raising a high-performance athlete.  (The day will also include Q&A, an autograph session, pictures, etc. for the clinic participants.)

Garret summarizes the aims of the clinic this way: “The AthleticFoodie swim clinic focuses not only on the swimming portion of being successful, but also on the little things outside the water that go into creating a champion. We focus on working with people to see the big picture of attaining dreams, not just how to fix your stroke.”

Garrett started his swimming career on a team that he says was very much like ours – he swam for his local YMCA team in Wisconsin until he left for college at UT/Austin.  With his focus on fitness and wellness, his support for the Maccabiah movement, and his background as one of the country’s great swimming champions, we expect the clinic to be a huge success, and a great way to help kick off our summer of camping at the JCC.

(If you want to learn more about GWG, try this article from Sports Illustrated or his TEDtalk from TEDxYouth from May 2013.)
